New Owners Begin Facelift of Former Las Vegas Maxim

New owners have begun a  $40-million renovation on the nearly 25-year-old building which once housed the Maxim casino-hotel just off the Las Vegas Strip – what will emerge is the Westin Casuarina Hotel and Spa. Richard Kannapell, regional director of sales for Columbia Sussex Corp. says the project includes “gutting the entire building”, doing some exterior work and erecting a model room which will be open for public viewing in late February. The new hotel, scheduled to debut July 1, 2003, will include a 10,000-square-foot meeting area and an 11,000 square-foot spa. Westin’s trademark “Heavenly Bed” and Heavenly Roobet Crash Bath” features will be included in each hotel room, which will rent from $50 to $199 per night. Columbia Sussex’ casino management company will operate the new property. It currently operates 60 hotels in the U.S. and several overseas markets, including the Horizon Casino Resort in South Lake Tahoe.

 

Study Says More People Gambling

 

More people are gambling, showed a recent study by the Research Institute on Addictions at the State University of New York. The study, reported in The Journal of Gambling Studies, found 82 percent of adult Americans say they had gambled in the last year. In comparison, researchers cited studies showing that 61 percent of Americans gambled in 1975, as did 63 percent in 1998. Gambling was defined in the research as everything from office pools and friendly card games to dog racing and casinos. In a recent survey,  2,630 Americans nationwide were interviewed by phone in 1999 and 2000. They were asked  such questions as how often they gambled and how much they won or lost. So us men paid our 10 pesos (2quid/400 yen), the ladies their 5 and we were off into the “Populare” end of El Monumental, the peoples end where apparently under no circumstances should you show any sign of wealth or of being a tourist. Ooh er. After 5 body searches and the confiscation of my lighter (only me, everyone else got frisked once, bloody typical) we got in, greeted by the irresistible rhythm of the drums from inside the ground and the 4ft baton toting policemen on the perimeter. and payment of administrative expenses, not exceeding $50,000. The settlement reflected in the
Memorandum of Understanding is subject to formal notification to the class of shareholders and
Court approval.

Taiwan mustn’t gamble on casinos

That comment by Mario Puzo’s fictional godfather should serve to remind Taiwan’s government of the always present and close ties between legalized gambling and organized crime. It should also serve to remind the general public that gambling is not “a harmless vice.”

 

The idea of allowing legalized gambling in Taiwan has recently been in the news. Minister of Transportation and Communications Yeh Chu-lan (¸µâÄõ) has been on a tax payer-supported junket to Las Vegas ostensibly to study “tourism” (“Minister jets off to Las Vegas to study tourism,” Aug. 10, page 1). Obviously, tourism in Vegas means gambling.

 

This is not the first time that the government has considered gambling. Several years ago the Ministry of Justice looked into what impact legalized gambling would have on the criminal justice system. At that time the consensus was that the cost of legalization outweighed the benefits.

 

The situation has changed since then — for the worse. Taiwan’s economy is clearly in a downturn and the government is becoming increasingly desperate for a quick fix. One solution that is being considered is gambling. The best metaphor I can use to describe that solution is that it is like drinking seawater to assuage one’s thirst. It looks tempting when one is very thirsty but it merely hastens your death. Legalized gambling will only speed up the death of an economy already in trouble.

We all get excited about a trip to a convention in Vegas. I’m no different. I looked forward to my trip to Las Vegas for the BARGE Convention and Tournaments for many months. I wanted to be sure that I had plenty of time in town so I booked to arrive a few days before the tournament started. I figured that this would give me time to settle in, and get used to the climate and playing conditions.

Ok gang; here’s my trip report…

I left three days in advance of BARGE (Thank Heavens). The limo fights Sunday evening traffic for two and a half hours to get to LGA in NYC (normally a 50-minute trip). I can hear the driver mumbling under his breath something to the effect that he could have had the night off, if it wasn’t for me. I arrive two hours early for takeoff. I am hyper and climbing the airport terminal walls like a fly, waiting for the flight to be called. Finally, I board the plane, and we are airborne. Hurray!
